日本では江戸時代に導入されており、その後1909年にゴム製の第1号が誕生した。ただし当時はまだ正しい使用法が知られておらず、使用後裏返して再使用したという話も多く伝わっている。当時の有名な日本製コンドームとしては「ハート美人」「敷島サック」、そして軍用の「突撃一番」「鉄兜」などがある。
